Dam Woden: The Curse of the Silent Sea by James Brown

For decades, no entity has struck more terror into the hearts of sailors than Dam Woden. His tales are recounted in dark taverns and on deserted shores, where the sounds of waves fade away, and the chilling stories begin. Those who have encountered Dam Woden either vanished without a trace or returned haunted by an unending nightmare.

Dam Woden appears in the most isolated places: aboard ships sailing deep into the ocean or on abandoned beaches in the dead of night. The worst part is that he doesn’t just come during storms or turbulent times; he visits even on calm nights, when sailors believe safety surrounds them.

When Dam Woden shows up, the world around you begins to change. Everything gradually turns a haunting shade of white, as if time itself pauses for a moment. There are no sounds of the waves, no whispers of the wind—only an oppressive silence. The ground or ship’s surface morphs into a pale, ethereal landscape, a sensation of emptiness that makes you feel utterly alone.

Unlike other beings, Dam Woden remains eerily still. He stands like a stone, arms raised slightly to the sides, resembling a dilapidated scarecrow. He wears a long black coat, beneath which is the uniform of an old soldier from a bygone era. However, the most bizarre aspect is the old wooden chair hanging around his neck. It resembles a school chair, yet it feels utterly out of place with his horrific presence. What does it represent? Why does he carry it? No one knows, but its existence heightens the dread more than anything else.

His face haunts people’s dreams. The upper half is missing entirely, as if something monstrous had torn it away. The lower half is fully exposed, showcasing muscles, bones, and remnants of flesh without skin to cover them. No one can look at this visage without feeling faint or wanting to retch.

What makes Dam Woden even more terrifying is that he usually doesn’t move. He stands as if waiting for something. However, if he chooses to move, the world around him fades to a stark white. As he begins to stir, colors drain from reality, as if life itself is being pulled away. If you witness this whiteness, you know your end is near.

Yet, he doesn’t see everything. There is one trick that has survived the legend: if you lie flat on the ground without moving, you seem to vanish from his line of sight. He becomes unable to perceive or sense your presence. This was the only method that succeeded for those who tried to escape Dam Woden.

The story of Dam Woden is not just a tale meant to frighten children. It’s real, or so claims everyone who has faced him. “The sea swallowed the blood,” said one survivor. “I watched sailors’ heads fly through the air while he stood among the corpses like a sorrowful scarecrow. The rain drove my comrades’ blood toward me, and Dam Woden remained still, just standing there, with his strange chair around his neck.”

No one knows the origin of Dam Woden, nor the reason for his existence. But what is certain is that he haunts sailors and ships that venture into distant waters. Each storyteller recognises that something dark and hidden lies beneath the waves, waiting for the opportune moment to resurface.

So, if you are a sailor or plan to travel across the sea, remember this tale. Remember Dam Woden. And if you feel everything around you turning white, lie down. And never move again
